I spent a couple nights camping at Cascade River State Park just south of Grand Marais. The first night, after setting up camp near sunset, I learned the value of checking one's gear before setting out. My white gas backpacking stove wouldn't stay lit. I fiddled with it for a good while without getting it to stay lit. I gave up and made an eighteen mile round-trip to a general store in Grand Marais and ended up buying a propane stove as a replacement. I'm just glad I hadn't backpacked several miles out to nowhere when I discovered the stove had given out--I need my morning coffee.
The next morning I was planning to explore the park for a while and then pack up and move on. It started snowing shortly after I got up and the forecast was for snow flurries. Well, it never stopped snowing until evening, and the "flurries" became several inches of the white stuff. I decided to stay another night rather than packing up a wet tent.
